Academic streaming for gifted and talented students

In Years 7-10 we have a gifted and talented stream for Maths, Science and English classes. This allows students with the relevant aptitude to work at a faster pace and explore higher level thinking.

Gifted students may accelerate in a single subject, for example, a Year 11 student could sit the HSC ahead of time in French or the visual arts.

In special cases where a student is gifted across all key learning areas and has demonstrated social maturity, they may be accelerated an entire year.

On occasion, an entire class may be accelerated in a particular subject.

Year 7 electives

All students have the opportunity to choose an elective in Year 7. Many of these are targeted to interest and extend gifted and talented students in their thinking and problem-solving skills. Students can choose from Latin, Philosophy, STEM, Dance and Drama. Academically gifted and talented students are encouraged to consider Latin, Philosophy and STEM in particular. Those talented in the Arts are encouraged to consider Dance and Drama.

Extension classes for Years 11 and 12

Year 11 and 12 students can choose to do Unit Extension classes on top of their required units.

In the case of Year 12 English and Maths, exceptional students can select a further unit of extension, resulting in them doing a maximum of four units in Maths and/or English. Extension 1 classes are also offered each year in French, Music and History.

Co-curricular activities

We offer a variety of academic, co-curricular activities to allow your child’s talent to blossom:

  • Philosophy Club
  • Chess Club

  • Robotics Club

  • French Club and Mandarin Club

  • HICES debate and public speaking competitions.
